   "From our first encounter with Randy at Landscaping by Huffman, we knew that we had found the right people to build our new patio. After looking over the site, he could envision exactly what we wanted. We didn't want to have something "over the top", but we did want to have something that would fit within our budget but be as esthetically pleasing as possible. Our site in the wooded dunes needed some creativity. Randy, right away, saw the possibilities and came up with a plan which incorporated the brick patio we wanted along with redesigning the plastic fish pond we already had. He incorporated a nice fire pit and added a walkway with berm along the back of our three season porch. The addition of colorful plants and ferns set among boulders was perfect for the slope to the lower part of our yard. He also incorporated a drainage system to take water off the roof of the house and let it run off into the woods instead of draining onto the patio. Relocating some sprinklers also made it possible to have a truly carefree space that we'll be sure to enjoy for years to come. Randy listened to all of the ideas and presented some alternatives and the reasons for his recommendations. He spent quite a bit of time at the site studying the house and contours of the property, the excessive water drainage issues that needed to be taken care of, the lake and landscape views from inside the house that needed to be maintained, walking and traffic patterns to and from the lake and around the property and landscaping that could provide privacy.    "Randy Huffman met with my wife and me to discuss a complete landscaping plan for our new home in the village of Glen Arbor. We emphasized our interest in a natural plan which would complement the house and the adjacent wooded areas. In the initial meeting, Randy determined the final grade surrounding the house. Because the front of the house sits above street level, and the grade slopes a full story in the back, Randy's plan had to account for substantial stonework at each end of the house.
A few days later, Randy returned with a sketch of suggested perennial flower beds, ground cover, shrubs, evergreens, grasses, trees and rockery. The entire yard would be mulched to enhance the natural look. A complete list of plants was included with the plan.
Three cost structures were presented and we chose the most comprehensive plan that included extensive use of boulders and "Huffrock" formed concrete steps at either end of the house that lead to the back yard. The proposal also called for an underground irrigation system.
When construction of the house was far enough along, Randy and his crew began the three-week installation of the various elements. First, the boulders and "Huffrock" steps were placed and the irrigation system was installed. In the back yard, two large fern beds were developed, along with a number of large flowering shrubs and hardy geraniums. Perennial plants were placed in openings in the boulders along the hillside leading to the back yard at each end of the house.
In the front of the house, imaginative gardens were developed and planted with flowering perennials and ground cover, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, grasses and forsythia. In addition, an island in the front yard was created by a circular driveway. The island features a number of existing hardwood trees and small white pines. Randy added two large blue spruce trees, flowering service berry and crab trees, and hardy geraniums.
My wife and I are thrilled with the finished look of the landscaping. Neighbors and passersby have been very complementary of the Huffman work. Randy and his crew were very thorough and professional, and we are pleased to recommend them to anyone seeking a landscaping company with a full range of creative capabilities. "
